Entrevista a David Fernando Hervas Phd. Matemática Aplicada

INTRODUCCIÓN

El colegio San Gabriel abrió sus puertas en Quito en el año de 1862 y desde entonces, ha educado a generaciones de ecuatorianos, en una labor de alto nivel impartida por la congregación de Sacerdotes Jesuitas, con espíritu ignaciano educando a la juventud ecuatoriana con excelencia integral comprometida con el momento histórico del país.

 El 9 de septiembre de 1862, el antiguo colegio de los jesuitas reabría sus puertas en la vieja "manzana jesuítica", junto a la iglesia de La Compañía, en pleno centro colonial de Quito. Allí, permaneció casi 100 años, para después mudarse a su actual y moderno local.

Bajo al protección de la Madre Dolorosa, personajes de la talla de Cristóbal de Gangotena, Francisco Tobar García, Remigio Romero y Cordero, José María Velasco Ibarra, Camilo Ponce Enríquez, Clemente Yerovi y Sixto Durán Ballén, entre otros, han pasado por las aulas del colegio San Gabriel. Algunos han servido al país desde la política, otros desde el arte y las ciencias, el deporte y la religión.

ENTREVISTA 

PRESENTACIÓN

Entrevista efectuada al Matemático Davis Hervas, profesor de la Universidad San Francisco, ex­-alumno del Colegio San Gabriel  realizada el   08 de Febrero del año en curso en la Institución mencionada.

CUESTIONARIO

1) ¿Quién  o quiénes y por qué decidieron matricularlo en el Colegio San Gabriel?

El San Gabriel siempre ha tenido fama y como  venía de una escuela de hermanos cristianos entonces la conexión era un medio natural  y además los jesuitas igualmente han poseído  fama en lo que es la educación particular.

2) ¿A qué promoción pertenece; algún nombre de sus compañeros o apodos?

Apodos no recuerdo ninguno, a ver Jaime Tilleria es un buen amigo, es un buen montañista, es un buen ciclista con el me veo frecuentemente por el deporte pero apodos no me acuerdo la verdad, a bueno si claro Giovanni Ladela claro al él le decían el cuy, el pingüino muy buen futbolista, jugo en la selección del Colegio.

3) ¿Cuál era su hobbie o aficiones favoritas en su vida estudiantil?

Cuando yo era estudiante veía las montañas y quería subir pero lastimosamente tenía  limitaciones por el equipo que no lo poseía y para pertenecer al grupo de montañismo se requería de ese equipo y no contaba con el apoyo de mis padres, bueno pero en si yo me dedique a la música.

4) ¿Conserva algún recuerdo de una anécdota o entre sus compañeros o profesores del colegio?

Me van poner como falta de memoria, lo que pasa es que mi vida fue tan dinámica, pero aunque tengo lindos recuerdos del colegio me muevo rápido, viví 10 años  fuera y cosas por el estilo pero tratemos de recordar, ¡ya! Yo soy matemático siempre adore las matemáticas pero no he sido muy madrugador en sexto curso con el profesor Carlos Echeverría “la oveja negra” nos hacía ir a clases a las 7 de la mañana, la verdad era de que yo iba junto con el resto de estudiantes a las 7:30, entonces tenía la media hora para tratar de entrar a clases y muchas veces se daba y otras no, entonces entre y no se dio cuenta pero entre, pero me quede dormido y en la media hora antes les había pegado una retada pero yo no oí por no estar ahí a las 7 después me levanta de un grito y me dice “Oiga señor Herbas usted es sordo y sínico” y yo le había dicho dormido disculpe puede repetirme la pregunta.

5) ¿Quién era el profesor y la materia más querida?

Yo tuve en excelente profesor de matemáticas en primer curso, de lo que me acuerdo es que todo el mundo no le quería a este profesor, siendo ahora yo profesional me doy cuenta de lo importante que era esta materia, al pasar a segundo curso no pude verlo ya ahí.

6) ¿Cuándo egreso que sentimientos tuvo y significo para usted darle el adiós al colegio?

Bueno yo como persona nunca me he apegado a nada, tengo bonitos recuerdos del colegio pero pienso que uno tiene que moverse, después de graduarme saque mi maestría y luego el doctorado, pero sentía que debía moverme, fue nostálgico pero veía al futuro.

7) ¿Al entrar a la universidad que tanto le sirvieron las enseñanzas del colegio, encontró vacíos y como los lleno?

Bueno aquí voy a ser un poco crítico del colegio pero yo creo que le falta la dinámica del otro contacto ósea gente que sea socialmente más adaptable con compañeras mujeres por ejemplo, pero de ahí  todas sus enseñanzas me sirvieron y les doy gracias.

8) ¿Dónde y en qué tiempo obtuvo el título de PHD y que tuvo que realizar para obtenerlo?

Después del colegio me fui a la Escuela Politécnica Nacional, me gradué de matemático busque algo por afuera del país, fui a EE.UU  primero saque la maestría luego el doctorado  haciendo una investigación propia de un problema matemático que se realizó en 1980, entonces lo realice y obtuve el doctorado.

 9) ¿De qué manera se realizaba las fiestas patronales en su tiempo y que piensa de los 150 años que cumple el colegio?

Creo que en Educación el colegio está mucho mejor, pero creo que estos 150 años deben ser tomados para una reflexión y para modernizar, en mis tiempos se celebraban con juegos pirotécnicos.

10) ¿Si volviera a la vida estudiantil que corregiría o volvería hacer?

Aprovecharía de mejor forma mi tiempo,  no solo me hubiera dedicado a la matemática si no ha intentar con otras cosas, hubiera aprovechado leyendo más libros, haciendo más deporte, teniendo una vida más dinámica.

11) ¿Ahora que lo mira como un ciudadano, como egresado, como profesional que diría del Colegio?

Digo que es un colegio muy fuerte, a lo largo de toda su historia ha tenido sus momentos de auge pero también ha tenido sus caídas, pero creo que si se mantiene vivo es por algo que yo admiro muchos de los Gabrielinos como es la devoción a la Dolorosa, yo le quiero profundamente a la Dolorosa pero pienso que no necesariamente se debe hablar con un Santo para tratar de llegar con Dios.

12) Para terminar un mensaje por estos 150 años a los estudiantes del Colegio San Gabriel.l.

Que nunca pierdan de vista el futuro que aprovechen su tiempo hagan matemáticas hagan preguntas,  den guerra a sus profesores con buenas preguntas, formarse más integralmente, que hagan una mejor dinámica de aprendizaje, y chicos la Universidad San Francisco da becas a los mejores estudiante y no les cobramos ni un centavo así que esfuércense para poder conseguir una de ellas. En estos 150 años, se tú el que marques el futuro.

INTRODUCTION

San Gabriel school opened in Quito in the year 1862 and since then, has educated generations of Ecuadorians in a high-level work provided by the congregation of priests Jesuit Ignatian spirit by educating youth Ecuadorian comprehensive excellence committed to the historical moment in the country.

 On September 9, 1862, the former Jesuit college reopened its doors in the old "apple Jesuit", next to the church of the Company, in the colonial center of Quito. He remained nearly 100 years, then moved to its current local and modern.Under the protection of the Mother of Sorrows, the likes of Christopher of Gangotena, Francisco Garcia Tobar, Remigio Romero y Cordero, José María Velasco Ibarra, Camilo Ponce Enriquez, Clement Yerovi and Sixto Duran Ballen, among others, have passed through the classrooms College of San Gabriel. Some have served the country from politics, others from the arts and sciences, sports and religion.We contribute to the celebrations of 150 years of school do so intensely and enthusiastically participating.

PRESENTATION

Interview conducted by Mathematical Herbas Davis, professor at the University of San Francisco, former student of Colegio San Gabriel on February 8 this year at the institution mentioned.

QUESTIONNAIRE

1) Who or whom and why they chose to enroll in the College of St. Gabriel? 

The San Gabriel has always been known as coming from a Christian Brothers school then the connection was a natural environment and also the Jesuits also have possessed what is known in private education. 

2) What belongs promotion, a fellow name-calling?

Nicknames do not remember any, to see Jaime Tilleria is a good friend, is a good climber, is a good rider to see me often nicknames for sports but I do not remember the truth, good if Ladela clear to clear Giovanni said he the guinea pig, penguin very good footballer, he played in the selection of the College. 

3) What was your favorite hobby or hobbies in your student life?

When I was a student saw the mountains and wanted to go but unfortunately was limited by the team that did not possess and to belong to the group of mountaineering equipment that was needed and did not have the support of my parents, good but if I spend to music. 

4) Do you keep a memory of a story or peers or teachers at school? 

I will put as forgetfulness, what happens is that my life was so dynamic, but although I have fond memories of school I move fast, I lived 10 years outside and stuff like that but try to remember, now! I am always adore math mathematician but I was not an early riser in the sixth grade with Carlos Echeverria "black sheep" made us go to school at 7 am, the truth was that I was going along with the rest of students at 7:30, then had half an hour to try to go to class and often gave others do not, then enter and did not realize but between, but I fell asleep and half an hour before had beaten them a challenged but I did not hear for not being there at 7 after a cry me up and says "Hey Mr. Herbas you are deaf and Sinic" and I told him asleep sorry can you repeat the question. 

5) Who was the teacher and the subject most dear?

I was in excellent math teacher in first year, from what I remember is that not everyone loved this teacher, being professional, I now I realize how important it was to this area, going into the second course I could not see already there.

6) When egress feelings you had and I mean to give a farewell to school?

Well I as a person I have never attached to anything, I have fond memories of school but I think one has to move, after I graduated my Masters and then remove the doctorate, but I felt I had to move, was nostalgic but saw the future.

7) Is Upon entering college he served both the teachings of the school, were empty and as the full? 

Well here I will be a little critical of the school but I think it lacks the dynamics of bone contact other people who are more socially adaptable with fellow women for example, but then all his teachings helped me and I thank you.

8) Where and in what time he graduated PHD and he had to do to get it?

After school I went to the National Polytechnic School, I graduated as a mathematician find something outside the country, went to the U.S. first remove the master then a Ph.D. doing its own investigation of a mathematical problem which took place in 1980, then the place and got his doctorate.9) How does the festivities took place at the time and thinking about the 150 years that meets the school?

I think college education is much better, but I think these 150 years must be taken to reflect and to modernize, in my day is celebrated with fireworks.

10) If the student life again that would correct or would do? 

Best take advantage of my time, I not only had he devoted to mathematics if not try other things, reading more books were seized, making sport, taking a more active life.

11) Now that looks like a citizen, as a graduate, as a professional I would say the College? 

I say it is a very strong school, throughout its history has had its boom times but has also had its downfalls, but I think if it stays alive is something I admire many of the Gabrielinos as devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows, I want to profoundly sorrowful but I do not necessarily need to talk to a Saint to try to reach God. 

12) To end a message for 150 years to the students of Colegio San Gabriel.

Never lose sight of the future to use their time to do math ask questions, give their teachers war with good questions, more fully formed, to make a better learning dynamics, and the University of San Francisco kids gives scholarships to top students and do not charge a penny so I strive to achieve them. In these 150 years, which you dial the future.
